2 of 3 today…

The cleanup of Chief Dewa’li John Bowles and his family lead to the following question …

Based on two current assumptions:
1. The Cherokee society is matrilineal, a clan is passed down through mothers and daughters. A man may not marry a person from the clan of which he is a member through his mother. A man assumes the clan of his spouse.
2. The names used here are current to Geni, I’ve not done research into whether this is itself accurate as it’s not germain to my question.

Chief Bowles was married probably 4 times, 3 of whom are known by name. His last wife was U-Ti-Yu Bowles (Vann). She appears as the daughter of John ‘Cherokee’ Vann and Catherine Vann (Hop French). Catherine was daughter of Cappee Hop French and Susanna who appears to be a Black & Chalakatha-Shawnee mixed woman.

So there is an issue of more than a clan descendent but a tribal descendent. If U-Ti-Yu Bowles (Vann)’s maternal grandmother is Chalakatha-Shawnee, to what Cherokee clan is she a member, or are all descendants from her considered Shawnee?
