In the following I give the arguments supporting a split of the profiles of Mary Carty (Mary Maher) and Patrick Maher (Patrick Maher, Horetown).

The sources I use are: parish records (https://registers.nli.ie/), census records (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/), and civil records (https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/).

First family:

Patrick Maher (Patrick1 Maher) and Mary Carty (Mary Maher) are known by the baptism records of their children in parish Adamstown, namely Margaret born in Clonough on 25 January 1845, Michael born in Clonough on 28 June 1847, Edward born on 05 April 1850 in Rathmine, Catherine born on 21 May 1853 in Rathnine, Anna born on 19 April 1856 in Nash, and Patrick born on 23 May 1860 in Nash.

The death record of Catherine Maher in Nash on 07 August 1883 identifies her as a spinster, aged 28. I identify her as being the daughter of the above Patrick and Mary, who was born in Rathmine on 21 May 1853 and baptised the same day in Adamstown. Her death record identifies her as the daughter of a tailor.

There are records of the death of Patrick Maher, aged 81, a tailor, on 06 June 1895 in Nash and of Mary Maher, aged 67, wife of a tailor, on 06 July 1891, also in Nash. Mary’s implied year of birth is thus 1824. His death was reported by Patrick Stafford from Ballycullane, her death was reported by her son Edward Maher from Nash. I identify Patrick Stafford as the husband of their daughter Margaret, whom he married on 03 June in 1877 Gusserane.

Second family:

Patrick Maher (Patrick Maher, Horetown) and his wife Mary (perhaps Carty) (Mary Maher, Courthoyle) are known by their death records as well as by census records.

In 1911 Mary was a widow living in Cushenstown with her son Patrick’s family. She was born in Co Wexford and aged 81. The most likely fit in the 1901 census is Patrick Maher, aged 78, and his wife Mary, aged 68, both born in Co Wexford, living at the time in Heathpark.

The death record of Patrick Maher, aged 90, a farmer, married, occurred on 01 December 1910 in Old Ross. The death record of Mary Maher, aged 80, widow, a housekeeper, occurred on 10 April 1911 in Old Ross. Both deaths were reported by their son Patrick, living in Cushenstown. Being still alive on 01 April 1911, Mary appears indeed in the 1911 census. Mary’s implied year of birth is 1830.

Third family:

Michael Carty (Michael Carthy, Courthoyle ) and Margaret Crane (Margaret Carthy) married on 25 November 1830 in parish Taghmon. Four children, all born in Couthoyle are known by their baptism records in parish Adamstown, namely John baptised on 14 December 1834, Maurice baptised on 26 August 1836, Anty baptised on 26 August 1838, and Michael baptised on 20 May 1839. No baptism record was found in parish Adamstown for a daughter Mary over the period going from 1830 to 1839.

In short: (a) Patrick Maher and his wife Mary in the first family are certainly not the same as Patrick Maher and his wife Mary in the second family and (b) is seems unlikely but still possible that Michael Cary and his wife Margaret from the third family had a daughter Mary.

Thanks.
