Additional information
LifeSketch:

Gino Bartali was a champion Italian racing cyclist. He won the Tour de France twice (1938 and 1948), and the Giro D'Italia three times (the first time was 1935),in addition to numerous other races. He was a deeply religious man, hence his nickname, "Gino the Pious". One aspect of his life that was little-known for many years was his secret work to help rescue the Jews of Italy from the Nazis during World War II. Bartali would transport false identity papers for Italian Jews using the tube in the seat of his bicycle. If the police stopped him, he simply said he was out training! Bartali retired from cycling in 1954 at age 40. He died in 2000 at age 85.
