Was John Shelton or John Chilton born in 1649 and died November 15, 1706
and married to Jane West Chilton?

I am finding more information and records for John Chilton than John Shelton.

I have documented back to William "Mountain Man" Shelton and wife, Ann Lomax.
William is my 5th great grandfather and would be the great grandson of John Shelton
or John Chilton.

Geni has this man

Captain John Shelton

Is that who you mean (different wife).

I’m not sure whether Shelton was alternately spelled as Chilton or a different family.

But Chilton does look different from Shelton here

Captain John Chilton, III

From what I have been reading, there are 3 different families lines of Sheltons, Skeltons, and Chilton.

From records, John Chilton was the owner of Currioman, and he died November 15, 1706
left a will naming his children and wife. This is in Westmoreland County, VA.

In 1660 land records show that a John Chilton bought 900 acres from John Gerrard.

One of the main reference books on the Sheltons has been found to contain wrong
information.

That totally rings a bell - it’s been a while since I tried disentangling.

Can you tag the profiles for William "Mountain Man" Shelton and wife, Ann Lomax?

William Shelton

William "Mountain Man" Shelton and his wife Ann Lomax.

So at a quick glance the tree looks good, and it’s Shelton all the way, never Skelton or Chilton.
