I’ve linked one of my family members (@ Magdalena Hendrica Faber) to the existing entry of the woman who was apparently the only person to die in the Durban RC. According to her death notice she died on board the 'RMS German'. She was 22 [actually 29] years old, originally from Griqualand (farm), Pretoria (actually originally from Barkly West, Griqualand West], not married and on her own in the Durban RC, separated from her mother and some of her siblings who were at the Howick RC. On her death notice you can see a Howick RC stamp on the opposite page, however, a blank page was placed on top of this page when photographed, so can’t get more detail from the indexed record.

I have a few questions:
• Does anyone know the exact location of the Durban RC?
• Did inmates from the Durban RC at times worked on the ships transporting mail, troops, military equipment?
• Could inmates from the RCs have received medical treatment on board the hospital ships?

Any information or suggestions of where to find more information. Thank you

Below is additional information on the ‘RMS German’:

The 'Geman' was a steamer from the Union Line and dated from 1898. The Union Line was under contract to carry mail to South Africa, hence the 'RMS' i.e. Royal Mail Ship. These ships were used during the war to transport troops, animals, supplies and military equipment while some were converted into hospital ships. Below are a few records of the ‘RMS German’ being utilised during the war:

London Times, 06 Nov 99 (Monday), p6a The hospital ship Spartan arrived at Cape Town on Friday. The steamer 'German' which left Southampton on Oct 28 for SA arrived and departed Tenerife Friday.

Passengers included were Lieutenant General Sir Reginald O Beauchamp and Captain Somerset Saunderson.

London Times, 21 Sep 01 (Saturday) The German left for England Sep 16, has on board Civil Surgeon T A G White.

London Times, 21 Jul 02 (Monday), p6a The German left Cape Town for [South Hampton] England July 9 with … [List of more than 1400 officers and men]
