Probably this is an old thread, however it could help you exploring your roots. My surname is also Gavars (Gavare - for female), and as far as I know there are many people with surname Gavars in Latvia.
Maybe it will help :)
I also have surname Gavare (Gavars) and it comes from Vecpiebalga, but there are many other places where people got this surname...in my fathers family resarch ir goes fae before 1840..
