Calling all Geni old-timers! Time to clean out your virtual closets and take a trip back in time to those early Geni days when merges seemed next to impossible, curators and the collaboration pool didn't exist, the tools were fewer and farther between, and we learned many technical tricks and workarounds to try to consolidate duplicate profiles of historical ancestors and connect our various trees together.

We invite you to contribute your memories (and any stored messages and forum posts you have access to as documentary evidence ) to help us build a collaborative history of Geni's progression from 2007-2011.

Where did we come from? What was it like then? How have things changed? What have been some defining moments? What have been the biggest challenges and hurdles that Geni has overcome, and how did that happen? Who have been the memorable figures in the trenches and on the front lines that have helped to move Geni forward as a user-driven service? What were some of the alternate visions of what Geni might become? What have been the experiences of us users along the way, and why have we stuck with it?

You can either tell your stories here or on the wiki page for the new Project http://www.geni.com/projects/Launching-Geni-s-Big-Tree-A-Retrospective. Share your experiences and insights, please.

I created a timeline tonight (at the bottom of the project wiki page) based mostly on highlights from the Geni blog, focusing primarily on changes at Geni contributing to more collaborative tree building. Please add to it!

Hard to imagine that it took over a year for the first merge to be completed.
