I am searching for the lineage of my second great grandmother Elizabeth Mary Lee of Virginia. She was born around 1844 and married Theodore Ross of Rochester, NY in the mid-1860s.

I have not seen this listed in any of the Lee's of Virginia sites.

5/6/2011 at 7:29 PM

Chris DeNoia we are fortunate to have a Geni user who has been researching her multiple Lee lines for years so I'm sure that she will chime in here. Several of us did research on the family as part of the project, perhaps someone came across her?

5/6/2011 at 10:23 PM

Thank you Hatte,

As some more background, she is listed in the 1870 census as Mary E Ross, born in Virginia: https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A%2F%2Fap...

While it looks like the last name is Rofs, I've learned the style during the last 1800s to write a double "ss" looks like "fs". The 1 year old son, Albert J, past away in 1952. His obituary lists his parents as the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Lee).

Chris, is her profile on Geni yet? If so, can you give us a link? Has she been added to the project? Eventually every profile added to that project will be properly linked in to the Lees of Virginia, or we will discover their true roots and know that they are not part of that family. In either case, you will discover her true family.

In our research as we set up the project and cleaned up the first couple of generations, we did discover another Colonial Lee family, unrelated to the Lees of Virginia, who went from England to Barbados to Virginia and the Carolinas. So you see, not every Lee born in Virginia is the same family.

5/7/2011 at 8:46 AM

MEZ - actually some of the Barbados branch are of the Lee's of Virginia - later publishings prove that it was so - as with the William Lee line, the initial research by EJL he had no conclusions and just assumptions.

But not all Lee's came from Richard I and Anne - that is correct.

Chris - do you have any more info? A date of death - I do have a lot Mary's born from 1820 to 1850's. I will check her children also.

5/7/2011 at 9:04 AM

Chris - I sent you a message - at this time she is not in my data base. You can post your search on my website for other researchers to veiw and perhaps you will get a comment or two that might help.

Chris - I did a little research and your efforts on Ancestory.COM appear to have taken you as far as you can go without knowing the last name of Mary E. (VA) who is married to Theodore Ross (c. 1644 NY), son of John W. (b. 1814) and Mary A. (b. 1819).

The only Mary E. Lee born during that period in Virginia that I can find are:

1. Mary E. Lee (1843-1913), married Thomas Speer Eichelberger

2. Mary E. Lee (b. 1845), Parents: Robert T. Lee (1793-1870 and Mary Ann Minor (1803-1880)..no marriage that I can find!

3. Mary E. Lee (1846-1929), Parents: John Lee (1812-1888) and Maria P. Lawrey (1812-1885); married Preston Herbert Sayre

4. Mary Lee (1844-1924), Parents: George Washington Bolling (1807 1875) and Martha Stith Nicholas Bolling (1808-1886); married William Henry Fitzhugh Lee

The census reference (and another one) you show reflects only Mary E. Ross as being married to Theodore with Albert J Ross their son being born on Aug 1970 in NY and died 2/8/1952 in Massachussetts ...there is no maiden name that I can find for Mary E. and without that, it is almost impossible to find unless you have some source document that shows what her maiden name was! Sorry!

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the research. I have a copy of Albert J Ross obituary from 1952 which refers to the parents as the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Lee) Ross. The 1870 census shows Mary E Ross and Nina (age 3) from Virginia and husband Theodore and Albert j (age 1) from New York.

The challenge is the census lists Mary E. and the obituary lists as Elizabeth. There is no doubt that Mary E. is the mother of Albert J. based on marriage records, etc.

I'm speculating at the moment that Theodore Ross was in VA around the end of the Civil War, met and married Mary E. Lee, had their first child, Nina, around 1867 and moved back to Rochester before having Albert J Ross in 1869.

Perhaps through her siblings or father there maybe a document that may show up that can help you further. Good luck!

5/7/2011 at 4:31 PM

Chris - have you searched in Google Books? I found a number of my mid and late 19th century relatives in obscure books, with discussion of their lineage. You might look for a reference to her husband, which would possibly also mention his wife's lineage.

5/7/2011 at 5:49 PM

Chris DeNoia

Can you link the geni profile here for Theodore Ross (Theodore and Elizabeth (Lee) Ross). Copy & paste the URL of the geni profile in a msg.

I am from the Ross of Rhode Island line and there's a branch that went to Rochester NY ... in fact could be my direct branch.

The dates Jacqueli just quoted are:

Theodore Ross (c. 1644 NY), son of John W. (b. 1814) and Mary A. (b. 1819).

So something is off with that Theodore's birth date.

5/7/2011 at 6:20 PM

Erica - I didn't quote any dates for the Ross's - what I gave Chris was the only lead of the Lee data for a Elizabeth (Mary) Lee born c. 1843. Not for an assumption - but to help his research towards a possible connection or document.

Sorry - just didn't understand why you thought I had given him dates for Theodore...

5/8/2011 at 2:11 PM

I could have been misreading! I got all excited about a Ross / Lee connection. I've been chasing Ross forever.

5/8/2011 at 2:24 PM

I do have some Ross's in the data - but earlier DOB's - I can send them your way if you want. Unfortunately most of the Lee's that migrated to New York were not of the LOV line, but related higher up (some) in the ancestry.

5/8/2011 at 2:54 PM

My branch of Rosses are from Tennessee ca 1800 and I am trying to solid up the connection to the Rosses of Rhode Island, quite intertwined with "Elder" Crandall.

There is a branch of RI Ross that went to upstate NY, and I believe but cannot prove to my 100% satisfaction as yet that they lead to my Tennessee branch lineage.

I want to be particularly careful here because there's a supposed marriage in (or two!) to Hungerford in the "upper branches," and that leads to Royalty, and lots of care needed ...

William Ross, Sr.
William Ross (1660-1712) seems valid, but I need to work on his wife / wives.

Erica,

Here is the profile: Elizabeth (Lee) Ross Mary Elizabeth Ross
Theodore Ross: Theodore Francis Ross

Theodore was born in 1844. (the 1644 might have been a typo).

Here is the 1850 census that shows Theodore Ross (age 6) in Benton, NY (not far from Rochester). This could be the same Theodore Ross, so it may track the parents back 1 more generation on the Ross side. https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://...

Hi Chris

Both of these profiles are set to "private" so I can see no details nor get into their trees. Are you the manager? If so, are you comfortable setting them to "deceased / public" ?

Very cool query results, Jacqueli! I will have to leave aside the early days, Rosses of Scotland for another time, but that

1. MARTHA A.1 ROSS was born Abt. 1869. She married ROBERT M. CRIDER, son of JAMES CRIDER and JANE WEATHERS. He was born 1868 in Carroll Co, TN, and died 27 Jan 1931.

Is in my direct ancestral neck of the woods. Need to check my own tree now!

Okay - if you more let me know :) This is just the Ross's that are in my own ancestral file, so it was just an easy query of looking up the Ross surname on my family tree (which is also the data file for the Lee's, etc.,) So not a problem if you need more information or Ahnentafel reports.

Erica,
they were set to public

I know about those Rosses - my partner is from the William Ross Sr. line, a branch that went out to upstate NY and beyond, then did a U-turn and went back to Boston about two-three generations ago.

As far as I or Erica have been able to document, William Ross, Sr. or his father came to Westerly, RI from Barbados, but we aren't sure when - and as for finding when that particular Ross line went from Scotland to Barbados in the first place, nada (yet).

I should get my partner to take a Y-DNA test - he's a Ross in the direct male line from William Sr. (Admittedly, that's only as reliable as the fidelity of the female line! :-)

Maven so how can we bribe your partner for the biggest testing possible:):). My male 1st cousin has results to compare with you know. R1b2 (huge surprise .. Not).

It would be awesome to separate "likely Welsh origin" Ross from "likely Scots" origin.

R1b1a2? Lotsa that going around - they usually recommend deep-testing (lots more markers, and more money for the testers) for that huge haplotype. :-D

Will see what I can talk him into.

What's nice is he's getting good hits now for gens 6 to current & they're all matching the documented Geni tree - so we end up helping others. He's having no luck yet on his Dad's side brick wall but at least it narrows "where he should look" in the UK

Check ut the New England historical and Genealogy Register Volume 157 Jan 2003, has the Ross's of Ipswitch, 3 brothers. All Scot descent, most likely sent to New England as prisoners after the Battle of Dunbar.

Highland Ross family then? I wonder if they married into any of my Ipswich MA families ....

The Ross family of RI was associated with the 7th Day Sabbaritan movement & their family associations were with Welsh & Huguenot. Which is an argument for Anglo / Irish or Welsh origins more than Scots for this group.

That would make them Seventh Day Baptists rather than Seventh Day Adventists, wouldn't it? (My recollection is that the latter group is relatively modern,a spinoff of the failed Millerite movement of the 1840s.)

Much closer the 7th Day Baptists, correct.

This is the church - still going - that crowd was associated with
