Why Babo is mentioned as Babo Arko

‹ Back to Documents Associated With Paul Oranda Askew

AS mentioned in the memoirs of Jurij von Arnold (1811-1898) the Arnold family ….

"Ancestor of the family Arnold was (according to Jurijs father), one of Count Babon Arko youngest sons. Arko would be a descendant of Arnulf of Carinthia, or Arnold, who lived in the 900s. Arko wife was Judith. Together with his (only) wife, Judith, he had 32 (thirty-two) children."

A bit hard to beleive, I agree. But…

We now know quite a bit about Babo, he was indeed married to a 'Judith' (Ita, which together with Ida, Jutta are common name alikes for Judith) . But he was married three times.

His many children are legendary (sources goes back to 11th century), sometimes 30 or 32 sons and 7 or 8 daughters. Thanks to geni.com we also know a lot (relativly) of his parents, and ancestors.

But why was he called "Arko" in the family tale?

Theory:
Babo was a margrave of Nordengau and later Burggrafen von Regensburg. He inherited a lot of property/land in diffeerent parts in the Holy Roman Empire. He also was a descendant of Arnulf of Kärnten. Kärnten is a territory in (todays) Austria, bordering to (todays) Italy. The family of Babo had lots of connections to Kärnten and northern Italy.

Babons grandmother was Judith von Friuli, His mother Williberg von Ebersberg. His father Poppo I died in italy.

According to Wiki, the County of Arco (in northern Italy) was held by the Bavarian duchy … Could Babos father Poppo have inherited <somthing> <some part> of Arco? This would certainly explain "Babon von Arko" as the usage of name was <name> of (von) the-place-where-they-were-born/ rather than a family name. <i>To be continued</i>
