Ælfwine, sheriff of Warwick

Ryton-on-Dunsmore was one of the villages given by Earl Leofric to Coventry Priory in 1043 [Dugdale, Mon. Angl. iii, 191]. [1]

Ælfwine of Warwick was a Sherriff of Warwickshire under William the Conquorer, and one of the few Anglo-Saxons to retain their lands after the conquest

Wulfwine the man of God.

FROM BURKE'S COMMONERS:

ALWVNE, who in the general survey, is styled, Alwinus Vicecomes. " The reason whereof," observes Dugdale, " I conceive to be either, because that he did exercise the power and authority of the Earle of Mercia, (seil. Earl Leofrike, his uncle) here in Warwickshire as his ancestors had done, for which respect he and they have been reputed earls, as I have already showed, and have ranckt them in that degree ; or else that he hath the custody of the county to the king's immediate use." Alwine left issue, TURCHILL DE WARWICK.

Edelwine ble forfremmet, i følge Dugdale, Han fikk utøve makt og myndighet for jarlen av Mercia, i Warwickshire slik som hans forfedre hadde gjort. De var kjente og respekterte jarler, Han kan også han blitt forfremmet fordi den nye kongen Wilhelm Erobreren umiddelbart hadde bruk for han for å bevare fylket. Hans sønn og arving Turchill de Warwick etterfulgte han.
