To your inquiry from the 31st of May 2000, we reply that Lev Ivanovitch Zarubin was born in a family of hereditary nobles in Tulskaya province. This title was received in 1860 by his great-grandfather Ivan Maksimovitch Zarubin, who graduated from the Gymnasium for Teacher’s Education of the Sea military school (Cadetskiy Corpus) and was working as a teacher in the Cadetskiy Corpus till he went into retirement in 1842. Lev Ivanovitch Zarubin was born on the 18th of September 1891 in Bessarabia (Odessa region of the modern Ukraine). Upon the request of his father, Ivan Andreyevitch, he was accepted to the junior common class of the Cadetskiy Corpus at the expense of the government. After graduating from the Cadetskiy Corpus on the 5th of October 1913, he was appointed warrant officer to the Department of Defense of the Baltic Navy, to the supply ship “Onega”. On the 29th of October 1914, he was appointed flag officer at headquarters of the Department of Defense. In the campaign of the 1914, the basic kind of military operations of the Russian Navy used to be active undermining of the German communication lines, and because of his rank L.I.Zarubin took part in such operations. “For the courage, displayed during execution of a dangerous operation of great importance”, by the order #72 of the General officer of the Baltic Navy on the 19th of January 1915 he was conferred the order of St.Stanislav of 3rd degree with swords and a bow. On the 3rd of February 1915, he was discharged from his post and moved to the artillery boat “Bobr” (by the order #134 of the), and on the 19th of April 1916, was moved from the artillery boat to the artillery of Primorskiy (that means “seaside”) front of Abo-Aland fortified position (by the order #240 of the Commander of Abo-Aland position). On the 30th of July 1916 L.I. Zarubin was appointed lieutenant. On the 6th of December 1916, by the order #945 of the General officer of the Baltic Navy “For the excellent diligent service and special actions at the wartime” he was rewarded with the order of St.Anna of the 3rd degree. On the 10th December 1916, L.I. Zarubin was accepted as a listener-student to the temporary artillery officer class (circular of the headquarters of the Navy #1366). Within the artillery of Primorskiy front of Abo-Aland position L.I.Zarubin commanded a battery on the isle of Era. The Revolution of 1917 has changed the life of the officer. After returning from the temporary artillery officer class, by the will of the company stationed on this island, L.I. Zarubin was appointed to the same battery. According to the captain I.K.Fedyavskiy (he used to be the head of artillery of Abo-Aland fortified position at that time) “…lieutenant Zarubin was a commander, chosen by the company”. Captain Fedyavskiy described L.I. Zarubin as “a simple man, gentle and affectionate, a honest worker… I appreciated him very much, because there were only few officers like him in the Abo-Aland position”. On the 13th of November 1917, L.I.Zarubin has been a commander of the 2nd company of the 1st separate battalion on the artillery board of Primorskiy front of Abo-Aland fortified position, on the 23rd of November – a commander of 8th separate artillery company. From the letter of the commander of the 1st company of the 1st separate battalion lieutenant M.N.Rosseter to captain I.K.Fedyavskiy, it is known that in November 1917 L.I.Zarubin had a conflict with the committee of 8th separate artillery company. Without informing the Artillery Committee of Abo-Aland position and the Baltic Navy Central Committee, senior officer of the 2nd company of the 1st separate battalion warrant officer N.K.Tarasov and L.I. Zarubin were arrested and moved to the Kronstadt Fortress escorted by four sailors. In the early morning of the 3rd of December 1917 at the station Vyborg, L.I.Zarubin was found dead in the train wagon, and N.K.Tarasov severely wounded, both men with cut wounds on their necks. According to the warrant officer Tarasov, “he tried to commit suicide by means of a blade from a razor “Gillette”. To ascertain the circumstances of the case, on the 9th of December 1917, a specially allocated committee went to Vyborg.

On the 10th of December the committee made a conclusion, that lieutenant Zarubin has committed suicide, and the case was closed. L.I.Zarubin was married to Anna Mihaylovna von Bremsin, the marriage took place on the 25th of July 1914, there is no information about the children in his service record. Captain I.K.Fedyavskiy wrote, that L.I.Zarubin had a wife and a kid. On the 16th of December 1917, the Artillery Committee of Abo-Aland fortified position considered a written statement of A.M.Zarubina, who asked to return her the weapon, confiscated from her husband during the arrest: a sporting gun, a revolver of the “Nagan” system, a latte and a knife. The resolution was: “To hand over the revolver of the “Nagan” system to disposal of the Artillery Committee, to hand warrant officer Makarov the sporting gun for sending to Zarubina, to sell the latte and the knife by auction and hand the money to Mrs. Zarubina.
