About Yosef (Feibesch)(Bajfes) Worms, zur Bär

Vifus Worms =um1501 HO 137 Epidat ffb-671

The gravestone for Vifus shows that his death date was 5 December 1502, which conforms with all of the records in Andernacht, and that his name was Josef ben Eliakim. His father's name is also confirmed in Andernacht #2398, from 16 July 1488. The records dealing with this particular case, where "Beifus" is unjustly accused of refusing to return pawned items to their rightful owner (And. #2345, 2353, 2357, 2363, 2404, 2407, 2411, 2415, 2434, 2442), imply that he had moved to Frankfurt from Worms. It is interesting that his patronymic is mentioned in the one record, possibly because his father was still living. But in Worms or in Frankfurt?

Vifus (Josef) shows as Beifus in the house of the Baer in the 1484 house list (And.#2196.8) as father of Gumpricht, who is marriet to Schoene. The 1496 house list (# 2850.2) shows him, about to be newly re-married, as head of household, with son, Gumpricht, and the latter's wife Schoene, and their children., still in the Baer. The 1499 list (#3084.3) shows them all there, described in exactly the same wording. It is not at all clear whether Beifus actually has re-married. And the 1502 list #3271.3) reveals that Gumpricht has died and that Beifus is being allowed to get a residency permit for one of his grandchildren (all of whom are apparently living with him now). The trustee for the children appears to be Natan Cahn, who pays their tax from 1503 through 1505.

Because the records which confirm that the "children" are actually Vifus's grandchildren were not available to Ettlinger, and because these children and their spouses continued to be described as if they were Vifus's rather than Gumpricht's, Ettlinger's list of Vifus's children is incorrect. However, all that is required is that the additional generation be inserted, and then most of the details fit properly.

The first child listed on Vifus's Ele Toldot sheet is Gumpricht ="um1501" who is, of course, correct. He is HO 134, and his Epidat entry, ffb-717, reveals his exact death date as 13 August 1500, and this is confirmed by Andernacht. The second child listed for Vifus is a son in Hamm, who is known because of a 1498 record mentioning that Vifus has a daughter-in-law in that town.

Rechle, the third child listed, also belongs to Vifus because her husband Joel (sometimes Josel) zu Muehlhausen is apparently one of the guardians of the other children (these being Gumpricht's children and Vifus's grandchildren). Andernacht #3314/17/19, 3326, 3342, 3344, 3347.3 mention them.

The children Samuel, Ende, Gutlin, and Edel all belong to Gumpricht. Samuel =um1508 is being given residency rights in 1508, is probably already married at that point, and then does not appear in any of the records which have been extracted by Andernacht. This does not mean he did not stay in Frankfurt, but identifying him is difficult. In any case, he did not necessarily die as early as 1508, and he could have moved away.

Samuel's sisters Ende and Gutlin =um1552 (who are probably one and the same) were married to Chaim Friedberg k"Ts = 4 Jan 1540 HO 172 Epidat ffb-696, and Samuel's sister, Edel =um 1562 was married to Isaac Isselstein =10 VIII 1551 HO 200 Epidat ffb-762.

All of these have further mention in the Andernacht material, and can be examined individually.

But the last person listed under "children" for Vifus Worms does not exist. She is supposedly an "unknown daughter, wife of 'Mor'". But she is really the same person as Gute eshet Chaim Friedberg. The list in question is cited by Ettlinger on Vifus's sheet and, fortunately, Kracauer's transcription in MGWJ of Ug E 56 B is "Mor Vifus diechtern". This line does not show at all in Andernacht's extract of the same record (#3678 ), because it was part of the next line, and he presumably read it as "Der Mann Vifus Tochtern, Hayum von Friedberg": meaning, as in the other cases, husband of Vifus's granddaughter, which he is.
