R. Shalom Shachna was born in 1760 to R. Avraham the Malach, and his second wife, the daughter of R. Feivel of Kremenitz.

He was named after his great-grandfather, who was named after R. Shalom Shachna of Lublin, teacher and father-in-law of R. Moshe Isserles, the Rama.

Shalom was six years old when his father passed away. His mother eventually resettled in Eretz Yisrael, never revealing her identity, working as a laundress until her death. She is buried in Tiberias.

Shalom and his older brother Yisrael Chaim were left in the custody of R. Shlomo of Karlin, who took responsibility for the children's education, and, when the time came, arranged shidduchim (matches) for them.

To Yisrael Chaim, he gave his daughter's hand in marriage. He then sought a suitable match for R. Shalom Shachna.

As the grandson-in-law of R. Nachum of Chernobyl, R. Shalom Shachna had many valuable experiences. He both learned from, and taught, his father-in-law.

R. Shalom Shachna was revered by the great Chassidic Rebbes of his time, including the Shpoler "Zeide" and R. Pinchas of Koretz.

Even R. Baruch of Medzibozh, who held most of his colleagues in disdain, believed R. Shalom Shachna possessed a unique nobility that would be passed on to his descendants.

His son, Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin

(Pogrpbisht, Ukraine, 1797 - Sadagora, Galicia, 1850) Popularily known as the Rizhiner. Rabbi Yisrael the founder of the Rizhin dynasty, was born to Rabbi Shalom Shachna of Prohovitch (who was a son of Rabbi Avraham HaMalach son of the Maggid of Mezrich) and his wife Chava a day after Rosh Hashana.

When only 15 years old he succeeded his father as chassidic rebbe of Prohovitch (near Kiev). With his phenomenal talent for organization, the young rebbe built the community into a chassidic center.

Chassidic tradition maintains that R. Shalom Shachna possessed a "spark" of King David's soul and that his son R. Yisrael of Rizhin had a spark of King Solomon's.

Ruzhin (Hasidic dynasty)

The Ruzhin (or Rizhin) Hasidic dynasty was founded by Rabbi Yisroel Friedman of Ruzhyn, (1796-1850).

Rav Yisroel's father was the Rebbe Sholom Shachne of Prhobisht, who was a son of Rabbi Avrahom HaMalach.

Reb Avrahom was a son of Rebbe Dov Ber, the Maggid of Mezritch, who was the main disciple of the Baal Shem Tov.

The six sons of Rav Yisroel all founded Hasidic dynasties of their own, including Buhush, Sadigura, Boyan, Chortkov and Husiatyn.

The dynasties of Vizhnitz and Vasloi are also descended from the Rebbe Yisroel of Ruzhyn through the female line.

The rebbes of the dynasty of Ruzhin are accustomed to conducting their Hasidic rabbinic courts regally, claiming descent from the Royal line of King David.
