James was the eldest child of seven known children born to his parents.
The family moved from New York to Pennsylvania just after his birth.
They left there and came to Mifflin Township, Franklin County, Ohio by 1842.
They were farmers there in the 1850 Census, but left to settle in Paulding County, Ohio for the remainder of the parents' lives.

James stayed behind and the 1850 census shows him: age 21, living with James Park family in Mifflin Township, Franklin County, Ohio.
On Dec 26, 1852 in Franklin County, Ohio, James married Betsy Zinn.
They had three children in Franklin County: Willis, Clara and Ella.
James was an engineer. He moved his family to Missouri after the birth of Ella.
They settled near Eldorado, Clark County, Missouri by the 1860 Census.
Here they had two more children, Sara and James.
On Sep 10, 1861 in Warsaw, Illinois, at age 32, James enlisted in Company C, 7th Cavalry, in the Union Army.
Just before his first year in the Army, he was Appointed to 1st Sgt on Sept 1, 1862.
James became ill and died from Bronchitis in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in Aug 1864..
He was originally buried there in Pine Bluff, but later re-interred at the National Cemetery in Little Rock.
He had left behind a wife and four children ages 11 to 5 years old.
On Dec 16, 1864, Betsy began to receive a Civil War Widow's Pension.
She and the children moved back home to Mifflin Township, Franklin, Ohio.
Betsy worked as a "Toll Gate Keeper" and raised the children by herself. She never remarried.
