About 2 rd wife Emmerentje Claessen Hoffman

"Emmerentje Claessen and her brother Jan Claessen, appear to have accompanied there sister Ida Claessen de Witt van Steenwyck when the van Steenwycks returned to New Netherland on the passenger ship "de Vos" , that sailed from Amsterdam after 31 August 1662 and arrived at New Amsterdam on 14 Nov. 1662. The following passengers are on the passenger list:

  • Jan Albantsen, from Steenwyck, and Wife and child. This would be the Jan, Ida and infant daughter, that were murdered at Esopus, Ulster, NN during the Indian raid on Jun 7, 1663.
  • Ammereus Claesen, maiden. This would be Emmerentje; she married Marten Hermanzen Hoffman at New Amsterdam on May 16, 1664.
  • Hendrick Albertsen; :Labourer. This is interesting, could this Hendrick be a relative of Jan Albertsen Steenwyck?
  • Jan Claesen; labourer, This would be brother Jan Claessen that settled in Ulster, NY and died unmarried.
    • Also on that voyage there were a fellow passengers "Roelof Hermansen, from Germany, and Wife." Could this have been a brother to Marten Hermanzen. If so, it would provide another clue to the marriage of Emmerentje and Marten.

Marten arrived at New Netherland in 1657, settled at Esopus, Ulster, NN; then moved to New Amsterdam. According to the City directory, he lived on de Here Straat (now Broadway). He resided in New Amsterdam and in Albany.[4] He also dwelt at Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. By 1678 he removed to Kingston, Ulster, New York. He received a grant of "Crown Land" in the town of Kingston, Ulster, NY on February 7, 1688[5].

It is unfortunate that the Genealogy of The Hoffman Family begins with Marten."

Possible death locations

Some have noted Shawangunk as her death place; others, Kingston. Both are in Ulster County, about 27 miles apart. Kingston is the county seat. The discrepancy could be a matter of where the records were kept. I'm just noting both locations.
