He, his wife, and his youngest children were sent to Tscheljabinsk, in the Ural Mountains in Siberia by boxcar in 1930.He worked there as a cobbler while his three youngest children worked in the mines. He decided that he would take his daughter Lena and go south to the Ukraine to find work for the whole family. Once they made it back to the Ukraine, he and his daughter took ill and died of starvation.His wife was allowed to leave Siberia and return to Waldheim, but not the two boys.
