John Campbell, 2nd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland was born on 19 November 1662. He was the son of John Campbell of Glenorchy, 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Holland and Lady Mary Rich.

He married, firstly, Lady Frances Cavendish, daughter of Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Frances Pierrepont, before 1690.

He married, secondly, Henrietta Villiers, daughter of Sir Edward Villiers and Lady Frances Howard, on 23 May 1695.

He died on 23 February 1752 at age 89 at Holyrood House, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. His will was probated in February 1753.

He was styled as Lord Glenorchy between 1681 and 1717.

In 1715 he was summoned to surrender after the Uprising, but escaped punishment.

He succeeded to the title of 6th Baronet Campbell, of Glenorchy, co. Perth [N.S., 1625] on 19 March 1717. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Tay and Paintland [S., 1681] on 19 March 1717. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Glenurchy, Benederaloch, Ormelie and Weick [S., 1681] on 19 March 1717. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Breadalbane and Holland [S., 1681] on 19 March 1717.

He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Perthshire between 1725 and 1752. He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1736 and 1747. He held the office of Chief Justice in Eyre, South of Trent between December 1746 and 1752.
