Biographical Summary

"Sir James Fergusson, or Ferguson, Baronet [S. 1703], of Kilkerran, 1st s. and h., b. about 1688; adm. Advocate, 18 Feb. 1711 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, Feb. 1729, and was served heir gen. of his father, 2 July 1734 ; was M.P. for Sutherlandshire, 1734-35 ; was a Lord of Session, 7 Nov. 1735, and a, Lord of Justiciary, 3 April 1749, under the style of Lord Kilkerran. He m. (contract 3 and 8 Sept. 1726) Jean, only da. and h. of James Maitland, styled Viscount Maitland, by Mary Jean, da. of John (Gordon), Earl of Sutherland [S.]. He d. near Edinburgh, 20 Jan. 1759, aged 71. His widow, who was b. 7 Dec. 1703, d. 29 March, and was bur. 6 April 1766 in the Sutherland burial place at Holyrood abbey."

"Eldest son of Sir John Fergusson, the first baronet of Kilkerran, and Jean Whiteford, daughter of James Whiteford of Dinduff, succeeded his father in 1729. He was admitted advocate, 20th February 1711; and elected member for the county of Sutherland to Parliament, in 1734. He was elevated to the bench, 7th November 1735, in the room of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston; and nominated a Lord of Justiciary, on the 3d April 1749, on the promotion of Charles Erskine of Tinwald; and retained both offices till his death, which took place at his house near Edinburgh, 20th February 1759, aged seventy-one."
