Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte, The Philologist

Louis Lucien Bonaparte,(1813–1891), philologist, was born at Thorngrove, a house in the parish of Grimley, Worcestershire, on 4 January 1813, the sixth child of Lucien Bonaparte, prince of Canino (1775–1840), who was the second surviving brother of the emperor Napoléon I, and his second wife, Alexandrine Jouberthon, née Alexandrine de Bleschamps (1778–1855).

Louis Lucien Bonaparte was born in England by chance. His parents had been arrested at sea in 1810 by the British while on their way into exile in the United States following the rupture of Lucien's relations with the emperor. Interned in England, his father was allowed to purchase Thorngrove house. In 1814 the family returned to their Italian estate at Musignano in central Italy, where Louis Lucien grew up. He was a pupil at the Jesuit college at Urbino in 1824 before embarking upon studies in mineralogy and chemistry at university. He read a paper on the atom at a conference at the University of Pisa in 1839. Indeed he published as many as seven works, specializing in the rare earth sciences. His interest in languages appears to have started as early as 1839 but the reason for the change of scholarly direction is not obvious. In 1832 he married Maria Anna Cecchi (1813–1891), the daughter of a Florentine sculptor, but the marriage did not succeed and they were separated in 1850.

In 1891, following the death of his first wife (Maria Anna Cecchi ), Louis-Lucien married Clémence Richard, with whom he was living and who was the mother of his son, Louis Clovis. Shortly after, however, Louis-Lucien died in Italy, at Fano near Urbino, on 3 November. His body was brought back to England and he is buried in St. Mary's Roman Catholic cemetery at Kensal Green in north-west London.
