About Hale Boggs, US Congress
presumably a small plane crash...wreckage never found
Thomas Hale Boggs, Sr. (born February 15, 1914; presumed to have died on October 16, 1972 but not declared dead until January 3, 1973) was an American Democratic politician and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the House majority leader.
In 1972, while he was still Majority Leader, the twin engine airplane in which Boggs was traveling disappeared over a remote section of Alaska. The airplane presumably crashed and was never found. Congressman Nick Begich was also presumed killed in the same accident.

Politician. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1941-43 and 1946-72, an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Louisiana in 1952, and a member of the Warren Commission, which investigated President Kennedy's assassination. On October 16, 1972, Rep. Boggs, then House Majority Leader, was flying from Anchorage to Juneau with fellow Rep. Nick Begich (D-Alaska), Begich's aide Russ Brown, and pilot Don Jonz when their plane disappeared without a trace. A massive manhunt ensued, but neither the plane nor the bodies of its occupants were ever found. Boggs' wife, Lindy Boggs, eventually took over his seat and served in the House for 18 years. He was also the father of political commentator Cokie Roberts. A cenotaph was placed for him at Congressional Cemetery in 1981.
