Edward Henry Charles James, 7th Earl of Ilchester GBE DL (1 October 1905 – 21 August 1964), was a British peer and philanthropist. He also held the subsidiary titles and styles of Baron of Woodford Strangways of Dorset and Baron of Redlynch of Dorset.

Background and education

Edward Henry Charles James Fox-Strangways, 7th Earl of Ilchester was born on 1 October 1905. He was the son of Giles Fox-Strangways, 6th Earl of Ilchester and Lady Helen Mary Theresa Vane-Tempest-Stewart, and usually went by his middle name of Harry. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. Fox-Strangways gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Horse Guards, Reserve of Officers. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.

At Oxford Fox-Strangways was part of the Railway Club, which included: Henry Yorke, Roy Harrod, Henry Thynne, 6th Marquess of Bath, David Plunket Greene, Fox-Strangways, Brian Howard, Michael Parsons, 6th Earl of Rosse, John Sutro, Hugh Lygon, Harold Acton, Bryan Guinness, 2nd Baron Moyne, Patrick Balfour, 3rd Baron Kinross, Mark Ogilvie-Grant, John Drury-Lowe.

Fox-Strangways held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Dorset in 1957. He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Ilchester and Stavordale, Baron of Redlynch, co. Somerset [G.B., 1747] on 29 October 1959.

Family

He married Helen Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Captain Hon. Cyril Augustus Ward and Baroness Irene Blanche Nicolette van Brienen, on 27 April 1931. The couple had three children:

Lady Theresa Jane Fox-Strangways b. 12 Aug 1932, d. 1989 (married Simon Monckton-Arundell, 9th Viscount Galway, with issue)

Giles Henry Holland Fox-Strangways b. 7 May 1934, d. 2 Sep 1947 (age 13, accidental death)

Charles Stephen Fox-Strangways b. 6 May 1938, d. 8 Jul 1958 (age 20, killed while on emergency military operations, Cyprus).

Harry died on 21 August 1964 at age 58, without surviving male issue. He was succeeded in the Earldom of Ilchester by Walter Angelo Fox-Strangways, a descendant of the 1st Earl of Ilchester and Harry's fifth cousin, once removed.
