WILLIAM SUTHERLAND, 17th Earl of Sutherland; born 2 Oct 1708; MP (Whig) Sutherland 1727–32, rep S peer 1734–47; opposed 1745 Uprising, though barely escaping being taken prisoner when Jacobites occupied Dunrobin (see below against Seat), fought at Culloden 1746, compensated with £1,000 (over £60,000 in early–2000s terms) for the Hereditary Shrievalty of Sutherland when such jurisdictions were abolished by Parl 1747; married c 17 April 1734 Lady Elizabeth Wemyss (died 20 Feb 1747), eldest daughter of 4th Earl of Wemyss (see WEMYSS and MARCH, E), and died 7 Dec 1750, having had, with a daughter (Elizabeth, married 29 Aug 1757 her cousin James Wemyss of Wemyss and died 24 Jan 1803):
