About Richard Gavin R.G "Dick" Reid

  Dick Reed was born near Glasgow Scotland on January 17, 1879. He attended School in Glasgow.  He inlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps where he served in South Africa as Lance- Sergeant  from 1900-1902 during the Second Boer War.     He immigrated to Canada in 1903, landing in Killarney, Manitoba where he worked as a farm hand, and then headed east to Fort William, Ontario were he worked as a lumberjack.   He travel west, to Alberta where he set up a homestead and began practicing dentistry. 
                                                                                                                                                                                R.G Dick Reid Married Marian Stuart on September 19, 1919.  They were married in Scotstown  school.   Her sister Donalda was a bridesmaid and George Reid was the best man.  Duncan McArther and Duncan McLean played the pipes.

They lived on the Reid farm (SW 1/4-30-48-8) until 1921 when Dick was elected to the Legislative Assembly and they moved to Edmonton. He was provincial treasurer of the U.F.A Government. In 1934 he succeed John E Brownlee as the 6th Premier of Alberta. After politics Dick became a commission agent , then the Librarian for the Canadian Utilities Limited. He was made a honorary member of the Edmonton Library Association.

Dick and Marian Reid had five children: Stuart, Flora, Jimmy, Richard and Kathleen.

Dick was predeceased by his son Jimmy in 1944, and his son Stuart on October 16, 1950. He passed away on in October 1980 at the age of 101.
