BIOGRAPHY Henri was born in 1616 of old Poitevin nobility, the son of Charles Chabot, seigneur de Saint-Gelais, and Henriette de Lur-Saluces. He was poor but good-looking by the time's standards, and it was only natural for him to choose a military career. Like his two brothers he distinguished himself. He fought at the sieges of Hesdin in 1639, Arras in 1642, Thionville in 1643 and Gravelines in 1644.

On 6 June 1645 Henri married Marguerite de Rohan, duchesse de Rohan, princesse de Léon, only child of Henri II de Rohan, duc de Rohan, prince de Léon, comte de Porhoët, and Marguerite de Béthune, mademoiselle de Sully. They had six children of whom Louis and Anne Julie would have progeny. As Marguerite's late father had been the head of his house, her husband Henri was made duc de Rohan in December 1648. The other branches of the Rohan family (as well as an individual who claimed to be a son of Henri de Rohan) protested and sued. Henri's son Louis de Rohan-Chabot was maintained in 1704 in his name and arms by decision of the Conseil d'État. Later, the head of another branch of the Rohan family was made duc de Rohan-Rohan (as distinguished from Rohan-Chabot) in 1714.

The dukedom of Rohan gave Henri the rank of first baron of Brittany and president of the counties of this province; he was appointed under oath before the parliament of Rennes on 29 August 1653. He died at Chanteloup (today Arpajon) on 27 February 1655; he was buried on 6 March in the Church of Les Celestins in Paris next to Admiral Philippe Chabot.
