About Sir Casimir Stanislaw Gzowski

Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (born March 5, 1813, died September 24, 1898) was a Polish-Canadian engineer. He participated in the 1830 November Upraising. and was an exiled officer following the upraising.

He left Poland in 1830 with his family, after the November Uprising. He first went to the United States, where he became a lawyer. His father was an engineer, and this led him to work in railway construction; he was hired as an engineer in New York. In 1841, he moved to Canada to coordinate the construction of the Welland Canal. Later, he was involved in many railway construction projects in Canada, as well as the construction of the international bridge over Niagara River.

He was knighted by Queen Victoria in gratitude for founding the city of Toronto and for building the first International Suspension Bridge over Niagara.

Gzowski was one of the founders of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. He organized horse races and established Canada’s first rifle association. He was also the first Commissioner of the Niagara Parks Commission. In 1890, Gzowski was knighted by Queen Victoria. As a personal friend of Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Canadian Prime Minister, he acted as interim Lieutenant Governor of Ontario between 1896 and 1897.
