About Sylvia Bataille Lacan (Macklés)
Sylvia Bataille Lacan (1 November 1908 – 23 December 1993) was a French actress, born Sylvia Maklès in Paris (where she also died), of Romanian-Jewish descent.
When she was twenty, she married the writer Georges Bataille with whom she had a daughter, the psychoanalyst Laurence Bataille (1930–1986). Georges Bataille and Sylvia separated in 1934 but did not divorce until 1946. Starting in 1938, she was a companion of the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan with whom, in 1941, she had a daughter, Judith, today Judith Miller. Sylvia Bataille married Jacques Lacan in 1953.
A Jewish woman of Romanian origin, Sylvia Makles would have her career shattered by the war. She had long frequented the vanguard of the French intelligentsia, among whom she counted her closest friends.
. . . As of 1940, Sylvia, who was pregnant with Judth, was living in the unoccupied zone. After a stay in Auvergne, she moved to Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Lacan joined her very two weeks. the Makles family has harassed endlessly, by the French authorities, who were soon to force Sylvia's mother to declare her Jewish identity. Learning of this, Lacan rushed to the police headquarters of Cagnes, accompanied by his mistress, and demanded the family papers, which were carefully arranged in a file on a shelf. Losing patience, Lacan climbed on a stool, took the documents with him and ripped them up as soon as he was outside the door. Naturally, he had "promised" the police superintendent to bring them back in due time. Without participating in the Resistance, he undertook, in Vichy, to obtain official papers for Jewish friends seeking refuge in the unoccupied zone or in Paris. Source
