British scientist inventor and judge. A renowed scientist, he is best remembered as an ardent early advocate of the consevation of energy and was a champion of fuel cell technology. He was the author of "The Correlation of Physical Forces" and invented the Grove gas voltaic battery, which was the ancestor of the fuel cell. He was invested with a coif and knighted in 1872.
