About Nathan Lord, MD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Lord
son of John Lord and Mehitable Perkins
sixth president of Dartmouth College (1828-1863)
Graduated from Bowdoin in 1809 at the age of 16, going on to teach at Phillip's Academy (Exeter, NH) for two years before studying theology at Andover Seminary. He graduated in 1817 and became a pastor at the Congregationalist Church in Andover, serving twelve years.
On the resignation of Rev Dr Bennet Taylor, President of Dartmouth College in 1828, Dr Lord was called to the presidency and remained there for thirty-six years. During his tenure, Lord brought the college into financial stability and was responsible for shaping the college into a semblance of the college today. Student enrollment increased and the campus saw significant physical improvements with new construction. Despite his uncompromising, disciplinarian approach, Lord's popularity was strong. But as the discourse in the nation turned to unrest, Lord appeared as an earnest champion of slavery. This was in contrast to the prevailing views of Dartmouth faculty and alumni; Dr Lord tendered his resignation in anticipation of being asked to leave.
He remained in Hanover and continued to be active in the Dartmouth community.
