During and after the Civil War, Marcus L. Ward gained the nickname “A Soldiers Friend” because of his philanthropic activities on behalf of the N.J. Union soldiers. Such activities included setting up an office in Newark to aid in the dispersal of a soldier’s pay into special savings accounts or directly to their families. If a soldier was killed this office also made sure the pension owed to the soldier’s family was paid.
There is a memorial plaque dedicated to him in the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden behind the Newark Museum.
Marcus Lawrence Ward descended from John Ward, one of the original founders of the city of Newark in 1666.
