About Lord Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, 3rd Baronet

Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston was born on the 24th of September 1648. He was the son of Sir George Graham, 2nd Baronet, and Lady Mary Johnstone. He married Lady Ann Howard, daughter of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Carlisle and Anne Howard, on the 2nd of August 1670. He died on the 22nd of November 1695 at age 47. He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, England. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Graham, of Esk, Cumberland [E., 1629] on the 19th of March 1657/58. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Cockermouth between 1675 and 1681. He was created 1st Viscount Preston [Scotland] on the 12th of May 1681. He was created 1st Lord Graham of Esk [Scotland] on the 12th of May 1681. He held the office of Envoy Extraordinary to France in 1682. He was Master of the Great Wardrobe in 1685. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1685. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cumberland between 1685 and 1687. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmorland in 1687. He held the office of Secretary of State on the 28th of October 1688. From the 30th of May 1689 to the 25th of October 1689 he was imprisoned for alleged treason for the misdemeanour of publishing his patent of creation as a peer by King James II. On the 1st of January 1690/91 he was imprisoned again for treason, and sentenced to death on the 19thJan 1690/1 but was pardoned and freed on the the 13th of June 1691. In August 1691 he was again imprisoned. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.
