About George Platt Lynes

Photographer. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey. Lynes is best known for his portraits of artists such as W.H. Auden, Jean Cocteau, Colette, Aldous Huxley, Igor Stravinsky and Thomas Mann, and for his fashion photography for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. He later moved to Hollywood, where he photographed Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Gloria Swanson, and Orson Welles. He also worked for the Kinsey Institute, which holds the largest collection of his male nudes, including a young Yul Brynner. Lynes destroyed much of his print and negative archives shortly before his death. He died from lung cancer in New York city.
