A. Spain Summerlin

SUMMERLIN, A. SPAIN (1817–1836). A. Spain Summerlin, Alamo defender, son of Thomas and Susan Summerlin, was born in Tennessee in 1817. He immigrated to Texas from Arkansas with his parents and settled in Nacogdoches. He volunteered for the revolutionary army on October 17, 1835, and took part in the siege of Bexar. He later served in the Alamo garrison as a member of Capt. Robert Whiteqv's infantry company, the Bexar Guards. Summerlin died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.

The "Spain" family of Pitt Co NC were neigbors of the Thomas summerlin family in NC. Some people have said that A Spain Summerlin came out of TN; however I have never seen a record indicating same. Most of us researching his father believe that Thomas B Summerlin spent time in GA with the Amason family prior to moving to Montgomery Co Alabama in the late 1820's. There is an old history text that details the court proceedings carried out to divide up A Spain's land grants in Texas.
