Among the first to take up arms in defense of his coutnry in the time fo the Great REbellion, having enlisted in 1861 and served over 3 eyas with the famous 30th OVI particpating in all its battles, and at last laid down his life to fill a soldier's grave.

His memory is perpetuated with those of fallen comrades by the monumetn reared in New Lexington by the surviving members of the regiment.
