Vermont Secretary of State and Jurist.

The son of Vermont Governor Josiah Grout and nephew of Congressman and Civil War General William W. Grout, he joined the National Guard while still in high school, enlisting as a private in 1893 and rising in rank to Sergeant before he received a Captain's commission. During his father's term he served as a messenger in the Governor's office. Aaron Grout graduated from the University of Vermont in 1901, studied law, attained admission to the bar in 1904, and became an attorney, first in Newport, and later in Burlington.

While living in Newport he served as Orleans County State's Attorney, a position previously held by his uncles Theophilus and William. From 1908 to 1910 he was Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs (chief civilian assistant to the Governor) and Military Secretary to Governor George Prouty with rank of Major. During World War I he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Vermont Volunteer Militia, the organization formed to handle the National Guard's domestic missions while its soldiers were deployed overseas.

He was an active Republican, was a Delegate to numerous county and state conventions, served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1922 to 1923 and was Vermont's Secretary of State from 1923 to 1927. From 1933 to 1941 he also served as Judge of the Municipal Court in Burlington. Grout was a member of numerous fraternal and civic organizations, and served as Vermont's Masonic Grand Master.
