About Aaron Lovett Neel
Aaron Lovett Neel and Charles C. Neel stayed in Madison County and are buried there in marked graves.
From George Shirley:
Aaron Lovett Neel descended from 3 of the most important families who fought in the revolution and built this country. They are NEEL, SHELBY, and CALDWELL.
Colonel Thomas Neel was a distinquished revolutionary war hero. You can find info on him on the internet.
Moses Shelby, Jr. fought in the revolution and his cousins included Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky.
General John Caldwell was the 2nd Lt. Governor of Kentucky, a revolutionary soldier, and an Indian fighter.
The Lovetts came from Virginia.
Aaron Lovett Neel died in Madison County, Mississippi. The grave is in the Pear River Methodist Church cemetery. This church was just off the Natchez Trace.
I once thought that Aaron Smith Neel was named soley for his great great granfather Aaron Smith who was killed by the Indians in 1776. However, it should be noted that Aaron Lovett Neel was married to Eliza P. Caldwell. Her parents were Robert "SMITH" Caldwell and Mary Shelby. So the Smith used for Aaron Smith Neel could have been for the Caldwell ancestor or the Neel ancestor.
The Mary Shelby mentioned above actually died in Louisiana. Her parents were Moses Shelby, Jr. and Elizabeth Neel. Elizabeth Neel was a daughter of Colonel Thomas Neel and Elizabeth Spratt.
You are a double Neel since Colonel Thomas Neel and the Captain Andrew Neel you previously mentioned were brothers, both sons of the Thomas Neel who wrote his will in 1766 in Mecklenberg County, NC.
Gets a little confusing. Also, you have to be very careful on the Moses Shelby's since the name was used by a lot of the Shelbys.
Your Moses Shelby, Jr. died in Mississippi and is buried in Claiborne County, MS if I remember correctly.
