Birth 20 May 1804 Stokes County, North Carolina, USA
Death 7 Apr 1882 (aged 77) Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana, USA
Burial Mount Pleasant Cemetery Garden City, Bartholomew County, Indiana

Able Shields was, I think, a son of William Shields (1780-1852) and his first wife Rebecca Robertson (1780-1825), of Stokes County, North Carolina (the section that later became Forsyth Co.). He was twice married, first to Nancy L. Wood (1812-1842, daughter of Dr. Joseph Wood & his wife Susannah Lindsay), in 1831, and second to Eusebia Folger (1809-1879) in 1845. Sometime in the 1850s, he left North Carolina and came to Indiana, where he died in 1882.

The children of the first marriage were Rev. Harper L. Shields (1833-1907, m. twice, first to Malinda A. Folger, second to Luzenia Nixon), Elizabeth Jane Shields (1834-1892, m. Moses Davis), Martha Emily Shields (1836-1876, m. Nelson Troutman) and Samuel Shields (c.1838-c.1859, m. Huldah Carter).

There were two children born of the second marriage, Lydia M. Shields (1846-1930, m. William H. Harrell) and Rebecca M. Shields (c.1851, m. Thomas A. Sharp).
