MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 1 There is some confusion about the parentage of Abigail Phelps. In Windsor, there is a record of the birth of an Abigail, daughter of Joseph Phelps, on October 15, 1693. Unfortunately, there were two Joseph Phelps having children in Windsor at that time, Joseph, the son of George, and Joseph, the son of Timothy, and they both had daughters named Abigail. Stiles, in his "Genealogies of Ancient Windsor", solves the problem by saying that both Abigails were born in 1693, and both married Samuel Marshall.

The first Joseph, son of George, died in 1695, and in the probate of his estate, his daughter Abigail is cited as being two years old. That in itself, is good evidence that the Abigail born in 1693 was the daughter of this Joseph, the son of George. Further, the second Joseph, son of Timothy, died in 1716. His estate was probated in 1718. In the accounts, a daughter who was married in 1709 is clearly referred to as "the wife of", while Abigail is referred to as "Abigail", and in fact listed last, which would indicate that she was the youngest child, probably born later than 1693. It is known that our Abigail Phelps married Samuel Marshall in 1716, and would have been referred to in the probate as "the wife of Samuel Marshall" if she were the daughter of this Joseph.

Therefore, we can surmise that Abigail Phelps was born in Windsor on October 15, 1693, the daughter of Joseph Phelps and Hester Hosford. Her father died when she was only two, and her mother later remarried. Abigail married Samuel Marshall on June 12, 1716. Together they had eleven children in Windsor between 1717 and 1735, including Rachel. Samuel died in Windsor in 1749. Abigail, noted as a widow, died on February 13, 1774 in Windsor. She was probably buried in the Palisado Cemetery, but no record exists for the burial.
