About Abigail Hatfield

Birth: 1711 New Jersey, USA Death: Apr. 27, 1781 Elizabeth Union County New Jersey, USA

Abigail Hatfield / Hetfield died in what used to be called Elizabethtown, in Essex County, New Jersey. Today this area is known as Elizabeth and is part of Union County.

N. J. Journal of May 2, 1781: "Last Friday evening about 7 o'clock, departed this life, in the 70th year of her age, Mrs. Abigail Hetfield, the amiable consort of Cornelius Hetfield, Esq. of Elizabeth Town. Tenderness and affability marked her natured temper, and among an assemblage of virtues her heart ever sympathized with the distressed, and rejoiced with the fortunate while her benevolent hand was always open to impart relief and assistance to the needy. True piety gave a distinguished lustre to every other virtue and enabled her in her last moments to triumph over the King of terrors in full assurance of a happy immortality.

Broome County was not established until 1806 when it was split off from Tioga County, NY.

Union Center did not exist in 1711. Unless Abigail was Native American (or related to a missionary?), she could not have been born in what became Union Center (Now Endicott, Broome, NY), because all the NY land west of the Fort Stanwix Treaty Line of 1768 was reserved for Native Americans, and Whites were not allowed there with the few exceptions of missionaries, and a few other non-permanent individuals granted permission to go there for specific service to the people there. The Fort Stanwix Treaty Line was abolished in 1784 and the lands held in reserve for the Six Nations (considered enemies as they had joined the British) were opened up to settlement.
