Abijah Holmes Dies at Hospital from Injuries

Fatally hurt when automobile overturns on Constable Road near Malone- Funeral Services Thursday Morning.

Abijah Holmes of Constable was fatally injured Monday morning when the automobile in which he was riding overturned near OConner farm on the Constable-Malone highway. Mr Holmes' daughter Mrs. Chester Lester, and Charles Freeman, also of Constable, other occupants of the car, escaped injury. The party started from Constable about 9:00 o'clock for Malone. While driving on the road a few miles distance from this village, the steering apparatus suddenly refused to work. The car pitched into a ditch and overturned. Dr. P.F.Dalphin of Malone was summoned and he administered first aid to Mr. Holmes. He was brought to the Alice P.Hyde hospital and upon examination was found to be suffering from a punchered lung and the fracture of several ribs. He passed away Tuesday morning.

Both Mrs Lester and Mr Freeman were badly shaken up in the accident.

Mr. Holmes was born in Brasher Falls and had been a resident all his life. Fifty two years ago he was united in maariage with Miss Bertha Cunningham in Chasm Falls. They lived at that place for many years. Mrs Holmes passed away nineteen years ago.

He leaves surviving three sons, Oscar of Chasm Falls, Homer of Malone, and Hollis of Owls Head; one daughter Mrs Chester Lester of Constable, and 11 grandchildren. The deceased had made his home with his daughter for the past four years. Previous to that he lived with his son Oscar at Chasm Falls.
