Biography

Abner Cain was born 1762 in Cane Creek MM, Union Co., SC, and died in 1816 in Warren County, OH. He married Sarah Townsend about 1782 in South Carolina, daughter of John Townsend and Elizabeth Pearson. Abner served in the American Revolutionary War. During 1781-1783, he served under Capt. Joseph Hughes and Col. Brandon Abner Cain and his family were living in the Union District of South Carolina in 1790 and 1800. Abner Cain, his wife, Sarah Townsend, and his children came from South Carolina to Warren County, Ohio in 1807. He is said to have brought slaves with him to set free in the North.

Abner Cain’s freeing of a slave in 1807 is documented as follows:

Black & Mulatto Persons Residing in Warren County, Ohio, page 9 From the Common Pleas Court Records 1804-1851 (Warren County Genealogical Society)“Be it remembered that on the 14th day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven Cook a black man, aged about thirty seven years (formerly owned by Abner Cain as a slave) enters himself as a free negro.”
