Biography

Abner was born in Plymouth on 24 March 1712, the son of Thomas and Joanna (Morton) Holmes.[1][2]

In a deed dated 05 January 1765, Abner Holmes of Plymouth, mariner, sold to Silas Morton his share & half in the meadow and upland and house, barn, outhousing, etc., that belonged "to the heirs of the estate of my honoured Father Mr. Thomas Holmes late of Plymouth deceased."[4]

Probate

Abner Holmes' estate entered probate on 10 October 1765 when Elnathan Holmes was issued letters of administration. Elnathan was the husband of Abner's sister Bathsheba. Abner and Elnathan were second cousins, sharing a great grandfather, John Holmes. In his probate records Abner was described as a mariner of Plimouth.[5] An inventory of his estate was taken on 16 October 1765 by Ebenezer Nelson, Lemuel Jackson, Thomas Jackson Jr. It included the usual household goods and was sworn to by the administrator. Real estate included 3/10ths of a lot of land at Nicks Rock, 3/10th of a lot at Duck Plaine, 3/10 at 4 Mile Brook, 3/10 of the upper pasture, 3/10 of a meadow lying in Plim[p]ton; a dwelling house and lot; a pew in the North meeting house; 3/10 of a pew in the same house "that was his fathers". Total of estate valued at £127.[6] Debts were accounted for and totaled £123.15.10. Among other debts were the following:

"One debt due to the estate of Thos. Sawyer of North Carolina deceased, said debt demanded by the executor Lemuel Sawyer of North Carolina (by his attorney John Cotton esquire) ... £20.10.0

On 27 December 1767 the administrator's accounting after sales of assets was £149, and debts were to be paid. No widow's dower was mentioned.[8][9]

03 July 1759, Court of Common Pleas, case #15. Nathaniel Morton (Plimouth Cordwainer) v. Abner Holmes (Plimouth Yeoman). Debt, on an "Obligation" dated 20 November 1755 for £26 on demand. Default by deft. Judgment for £12.11s.9d. and £1.4s.7d. costs.[10]
April 1760 Court of Common Pleas, case #45. Perez Tillson (Plimouth Merchant) v. Abner Holmes (Plimouth Mariner). On note dated 1 January 1760 for £5.17s.7d. with interest. Judgment for £5.192.7d. and 26s costs.[11]
03 Oct 1764 Court of Common Pleas, case #8. Samuel NIchols Nelson, Gent. (Plimouth) v. Abner Holmes (Plimouth Mariner) and Ebenezer Nelson (Plimouth Yeoman), execs. Samuel Nelson (Plimouth Yeoman). Trespass on the Case, on book account for £84.3s.4d. due 6 December 1746. Deft. "Confessed Judgment for Cost" Judgment for £4.8s.3d.[12]
10 April 1770, Court of Common Please, case #97. Thomas Torrey (Plymouth Merchant) v. Elnathan Holmes (Plymouth Mariner) adm Abner Holmes (Plymouth Mariner) Trespass on the Case. "The plt. came into court and was nonsuited. Whereupon the deft. prayed for costs. Taxed at two pounds, one shilling and six pence."[13]

Abner was born in Plymouth on 24 March 1712, the son of Thomas and Joanna (Morton) Holmes.[1][2]
