Abraham (Adolf) Gartenberg

Served in the Austrian Army in Northern Italy during WW1

Said his mother had come from Fiume (this must have been his stepmother, as his biological mother died when he was very young)

Left Poland aged around 14 and went to Germany to study textiles, possibly in Jülich.

Went into the clothing business in the Netherlands, taking a share in a shirt factory.

According to his daughter lived for a time with and perhaps worked for a family called Hertz (friends of or related to his future wife Erna?) who lived in a large villa in Aarenhout in the Netherlands.

Was deported from Bedburg with his wife and daughter in 1938 to the Polish Corridor, but managed to slip through and travel on to Lwow, where some of his family lived. They stayed in Poland for 11 months, before fleeing to Romania when the Nazis invaded Poland and finally obtaining visas and a paid passage on a ship to Palestine, arriving on 10 May 1940.

In 1949, according to a newspaper advert celebrating their silver wedding anniversary, he and his wife Erna were living at 198 Ben Yehuda Street in Tel Aviv.

Later they lived in Ramat Gan.

Long after his wife died, towards the end of his life he lived with a companion named Edith.
