About Chaim Gartenberg
Chaim was born in Siemiginow, his parents' and grandparents' home town.
He married Jite Terkel on 12 February 1897, many years after starting a family with her in Woloska Wies, where Jite's father Leib was a salt merchant. According to the marriage record, the couple were married by Menasche Frish, the 'religious official' in Bolechow, in Bolechow, with the ceremony witnessed by Leiser Wechsler and Smiel Händel, both - like Chaim - listed as salt merchants in Bolechow. However, later records (births of his children) list Chaim as a cattle dealer in Woloska Wies. According to his grandson, he may also have been a horse dealer and part-time bailiff to a local Polish nobleman, supposedly to Count Potocki (though this may be family lore). Chaim also had a carp pond on his farm. He had a long white beard, and according to his German-speaking granddaughter, who met him in Galicia in 1939, spoke Polish and wore a dark suit (not in the Hassidic style), which is when he was last seen.
This is not the Chayim Gartenberg who was murdered in Stryj in the Shoah.
