  • Robert Sonnenmark 21 MAR 1888 Hohenau, Austria-25 NOV 1942 Auschwitz. Married Marta Huber 23 JUN 1898, Tath, Hungary-20 OCT 1944 Auschwitz. Robert had a son Peter (b. 1926 in Prostějov / Prossnitz, Czechoslovakia). Robert and Marta and a daughter were killed in Auschwitz, but Peter was able to escape to Palestine with the help of an uncle, Francis Huber. He immigrated to the United States in his early 20s, and died in 2010. Peter's wife, Eve Hoffenreich, escaped Austria with her parents during the Holocaust and immigrated to the United States in 1938, when she was 11 years old. She died in 1973. Dr. Robert Sonnenmark who died at Dachau in approx. 1943 after being interned there since 1939.Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) archive, March 18, 1943: "Dr. Robert Sonnenmark, prominent Czech Jewish leader, has died in the notorious Dachau concentration camp in Germany, where he had been interned since 1939, according to information reaching Czechoslovakian circles here today. Dr. Sonnenmark was a member of the executive committee of the Zionist Federation of Czechoslovakia and was a leader of the Jewish party there."

Sonnenmark family correspondence is Accession Number: 2012.65.1, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Correspondence between members of the family of Robert Sonnenmark, of Prossnitz, in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (Prostějov, Czech Republic). Most of the letters are from Robert, while he was imprisoned at Buchenwald, addressed to his wife, Marta and daughter, Miriam in Prossnitz, and dated from October 1939 to March 1940. Many of these letters were forwarded by Marta to her father and brother in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, who added their own comments in the margins and forwarded them to Peter Sonnenmark, the son of Marta and Robert, who was living in Palestine. Other correspondence includes Red Cross letters sent by Peter to his parents and sister, June 1940 to July 1942; postcards sent by Marta to her father, Adolf Huber, in Zagreb, from January 1940 to August 1942; one postcard sent by Marta to Leo Susmann in Madrid, June 1942; and one postcard each sent by Marta and her daughter Miriam, after their deportation to Theresienstadt, and addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stern, Marta's uncle and aunt, in Prossnitz, May 1944. -- In United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, gift of Lauren Greenberg
