Abraham DeWitt Baldwin

Find A Grave Memorial ID # 27487279

Baldwin, third son of David Lewis and Martha Pond (DeWitt) Baldwin, was born in Milford, Connecticut on October 15, 1828.

After graduation he studied at Yale Law School until January of 1852, when he entered the office of Philo T. Ruggles, Esquire, in New York City. He was admitted to the bar in October, 1852, and soon after entered the office of Judge Charles A. Peabody, passing in May, 1853, to the office of Judge Benjamin W. Bonney, in connection with whom he remained until May 1, 1859, when he formed a law partnership with his classmate Farnham, which continued for fourteen years.

As a member of the 7th Regiment, of New York City, he participated in the Maryland campaign of January, 1863. He continued in the practice of his profession in New York until broken down by illness. He was sunstruck while parading (as a veteran) with the 7th Regiment at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, an suffered a second attack as the regiment was marching up Broadway on its return.

Progressive paralysis of the brain was developed by degrees, and a few months before his death he was taken, by his own desire, to the Bloomingdale Asylum in New York, where he died, August 26, 1880, in his 52nd year.

He was married, October 24, 1877, to Miss Mamie E. Christie of New York City, who survives him, without children.
