About Abraham Cohen
Abraham Cohen was born in 1739 in London, England the eldest son of Moses Cohen. He arrived circa 1762 at age 10 into Charleston, and lived forty years in Prince George's Parish (Georgetown), South Carolina. He was a Revolutionary War participant in 1776, and supported the Patriots. He died at home on Prince Street on December 10, 1800 and was buried in Beth Elohim cemetery for Portuguese Jews in Georgetown, next to Esther Cohen (Myers) his sister and brother n' law Mordecai Myers, and several of his brother Solomon Cohen children that died before age five. Abraham Cohen (!739-1800) helped to establish Beth Elohim Cemetery in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1772, twenty-eight years before he was laid to rest there. Abraham Cohen was the oldest child of Moses Cohen (1709-1762) the first religious leader of the small congregation of Portuguese Jews in Charleston, SC circa 1750.
