Abraham Obadiah Cooper, the ninth child of Obadiah Cooper and Cornelia Gardinier was baptized on February 21, 1728 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany.[1] He married Catharina Ostrander on March 22, 1752 also at the Albany Dutch church. Records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, 1683-1809, Part 4, 1750-1764, p. 3. At that time Abraham was from Albany and Catharina from the Rennsaelaer Colonies.[2]

Abraham paid taxes from 1757 through 1759 at Rombout Precinct, Dutchess County, before moving to Albany. It was there that their daughter Annetje was baptized. The other children were baptized in Albany. Abraham was appointed Constable of the First Ward at Albany September 29, 1755, and Fire Master of same ward on November 6, 1756. Citizens thus appointed were obliged to serve wellor pay a heavy fine. Abraham and Catharina had nine children, seven girls and two boys. Their first son only lived a week.[3]

Abraham enlisted in the Revolutionary War as a private in Captain Amos Hutchings' 2nd Company, 5th regiment of the New York Line, commanded by Colonel Lewis Dubois. He was discharged 19 Apr 1778.[4] He was forty-nine years of age at the time of his enlistment.

Abraham Cooper had been a widower for 13 years, when on June 5, 1779, he married "Lena" Van Buren (born 26 Jan 1725), a daughter of Pieter Van Buren and his wife Gertruy Vosburgh. Both "Abraham Cooper, widower," and "Lena Van Buren, spinster" were residents of Schodack according to the marriage register of the Kinderhook Dutch Reformed Church, where their marriage took place. At the time of his second marriage Abraham was 51 years old and "Lena" Van Buren (baptized Magdalena) was 54 years old.

Abraham Cooper was one of the founders of the Dutch Reformed Church at East Greenbush,Rensselaer Co., on 14 September 1787, at which time was elected a Deacon. On 10 May 1789, he was elected an Elder, and was reelected to that office in May, 1791. The records of this Church also state that Lena Van Buren united with it 23 July 1790, and opposite that record is the penciled work "Dead," but the date of the death is not given.[5]

Abraham Cooper by Stefan Bielinski Abraham Cooper was born in February 1728. He was the son of Obadiah and Cornelia Gardinier Cooper. He grew up in a large family in a modest home on the Southside of Albany . His father died in 1742 and his mother six years later - leaving him a complete orphan at the age of twenty..

In March 1752, he married Catharina Ostrander of Rensselaerswyck at the Albany Dutch church. By 1766, ten children had been christened in Albany where he was an occasional baptism sponsor. His wife may have died about the time of the birth of their last child.

This tailor's son was a weaver and an Albany householder who was appointed constable for the first ward in 1755 and firemaster the year after. At some time thereafter, he reportedly moved out to Schodack and then to Guilderland in the manor. He is said to have married Lena Van Buren in Kinderhook in June 1779.

In 1766 and '67, his West bank Rensselaerswyck property was valued on Albany County assessment rolls. About that time, his name appeared on the roster of a Rensselaerswyck militia company.
