He was the son of Joseph Kenton Kiser Jr. and Mary Childress. He married Mary Counts. He and Mary used to live on the farm next to this cemetery. She was said to have been buried a few miles away at the Spruce Pine Hollow Cemetery, although they have matching headstones.
