In October 1685, during the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, at his home in Strasburg, Abraham was martyred by the Catholics, along with his wife and six of his children (Judith [born in 1660], Philip [born in 1664], Jacob [born in 1666], Mary [born in 1671], Susanna [born in 1672], and Charles [born in 1680]).

His son, Isaac (born in 1669) was the only one of his children who was able to escape. About the only possession he was able to take with him was the family Bible. It was a capital crime to be in possession of a Calvinist Bible, and legend has it that his mother had baked it into a loaf of bread so that he was able to transport it undetected. That Bible is now owned by the Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) Historical Society (http://www.lancasterhistory.org/), which has spent a large amount of time and money rebinding and preserving it, and it is one of the most requested items to view in their collection.
