Abraham Lucas & Marcy Mary Kelsey 1761 - 1841

Abraham Lucas was born in 1761 in Long Valley in Morris County, New Jersey. He was the son of Thomas Lucas and Sarah Rhoda Medford. Marcy Mary Kelsey was born in 1764 in Morris County, New Jersey. Her father was Thomas Kelsey her mother had the maiden of Stark. Abraham and Marcy were married in 1785 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and started their family with the births of Joseph Prince Lucas in 1786, Thomas Lucas in 1788 and James Lucas in 1789.

Their family continued to grow with the births of Sarah Lucas in 1794, Mary Lucas in 1796, Phebe Lucas in 1799, Jabez Lucas in 1800, John T Lucas in 1801, Rhoda Lucas in 1802 and Jesse K Lucas in 1807. In 1802 Joseph Prince Lucas married Sarah Price and they started their family with the births of Peter P Lucas in 1804, Eva Lucas in 1805 and Abraham C Lucas in 1807. On June 29, 1809 Thomas Lucas married Sarah Holbit.

Abraham and Marcy Lucas had one more child; Jane Lucas was born in 1810. Joseph and Sarah Lucas’ family continued to grow with the births of Mary Polly Lucas in 1810, Susannah Lucas in 1812, Lucinda Lucas in 1815 and George M Lucas in 1818. Thomas and Sarah Lucas started their family with the births of Catherine Lucas in 1810, Marcy Jane Lucas in 1814, Mellissa Lucas in 1816 and William Caleb Lucas in 1819. In 1812 James Lucas married Hannah Bowman and they started their family with the births of George B Lucas in 1812, Thomas Lucas in 1814, Abraham H. Lucas in 1816 and Mary Lucas in 1818. In 1812 Sarah Lucas married William Copeland and they started their family with the births of John Daniel Copeland in 1813, Abraham Lucas Copeland in 1814, Isaac Copeland in 1816 and Jacob Copeland in 1817. On February 23, 1815 Mary Lucas married John Turner in Clinton County, Ohio and they started their family with the births of Allen Turner in 1817 and Phebe Turner in 1818. On June 10, 1819 Phebe Lucas married Solomon Wood and on September 30, 1819 Rhoda Lucas married Samuel Weatherhead Powers.

The 1820’s brought many more grandchildren to Abraham and Marcy Lucas, but also the first death of one of their children, of which there would be many. Joseph and Sarah Lucas had two more children, Louisa Jane Lucas was born in 1820 and Catherine Lucas in 1821. Thomas and Sarah Lucas’ family continued to grow with the births of Margaret Lucas in 1822, Abraham Kelsey Lucas in 1825 and John H Lucas in 1827. James and Hannah Lucas’ family also continued to grow with the births of Phebe Lucas in 1820, Elizabeth Lucas in 1822, John R Lucas in 1824 and Sarah Ann Lucas in 1826. James Lucas died on September 29, 1827 in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 38 for reasons unknown at this time. Sarah and William Copeland’s family exploded through the 1820’s with the births of Samuel Miller Copeland in 1820, Therza Copeland in 1821, Asenatha Copeland in 1822, Mary Copeland in 1825, a stillborn infant in 1827 and Sarah Copeland in 1828. Mary and John Turner’s family also grew at an explosive rate, around 1820 Mary gave birth to Walter Turner and William Turner, and then again around 1825 she gave births to Abraham Turner, Mercy Turner and Mary Turner. (The exact dates of birth for the afore mentioned five children I have not yet determined.) She had Jesse K Turner in 1827 and Lydia Turner in 1828. Phebe and Solomon Wood started their family with the births of Sarah Wood in 1824, Isabel Wood in 1825 and Jane Wood in 1828. On October 6, 1825 Jabez Lucas married Elizabeth Airy and they started their family with the births of William Lucas in 1827 and Abraham Lucas in 1828. On March 15, 1821 John T Lucas married Sarah Bowman in Clinton County, Ohio and they started their family with the births of Mary Ann Lucas in 1824, Elizabeth Lucas in 1827, Abraham Lucas in 1828 and Hannah Lucas in 1829. Rhoda and Samuel Powers started their family with the births of Stephen Powers in 1820 and Aquilla D Powers in 1824. On May 6, 1827 Jesse K Lucas married Sarah Bowman in Sagamon Township in Logan County, Illinois and they started their family with the birth of Sarah Lucas in 1829. On March 3, 1825 Jane Lucas married Berryman Baughan in Greene County, Ohio and they started their family with the birth of Margaret Baughan in 1827.

Several of Abraham and Marcy’s children died through the 1830’s and they were blessed with several more grandchildren. Joseph Prince Lucas died on August 13, 1838 in Sagamon Township in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 52. Thomas and Sarah Lucas had their last child, Mary Ann Lucas in 1830. Thomas died on October 15, 1831 in Sagamon Township in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 43 for reasons unknown to me. Sarah and William Copeland’s family continued to grow with the births of Abner Copeland in 1830, Irena Copeland in 1832, Elizabeth Copeland in 1834 and Louisa Bethesda Copeland in 1838. Mary and John Turner had two more children, Harmon B Turner was born in 1832 and John L Turner in 1834. Phebe and Solomon Wood’s family grew at an explosive rate through the 1830’s with the births of Susannah Wood in 1831, Berryman Baughan Wood in 1834, Joel Wood in 1835, Lucinda Wood in 1837 and Rebecca Wood in 1839. Jabez and Elizabeth Lucas had two more children, Charles Lucas was born in 1834 and Thomas Lucas in 1838. John and Sarah Lucas’ family continued to grow with the births of Thomas Franklin Lucas in 1831, Caleb Kelsey Lucas in 1833, John A Lucas in 1835 and Jane Lucas in 1837. Rhoda and Samuel Powers’ family continued to grow with the births of Sarah Powers in 1830, Margaret Powers in 1832 and Charles Wesley Powers in 1837. Marcy Mary (Kelsey) Lucas passed away in August of 1835 in Mt Pulaski in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 52. Jesse and Jane Lucas’ family continued to grow with the births of Richard Bowman Lucas in 1830, Abraham H Lucas in 1833, Mary Jane Lucas in 1836 and Arminda Lucas in 1839. Jane and Berryman Baughan’s family grew at an explosive rate through the 1830’s with the births of Lystra Baughan in 1830, Abraham Baughan in 1832, Hiram Baughan in 1833, Mary B Baughan in 1834, Berryman Baughan Jr. in 1835 and Jane Baughan in 1837. Jane (Lucas) Baughan passed away on November 29, 1837, one week after her last child’s birth, apparently from complications from child birth, in Corwin in Login County, Illinois at the age of 27. The 1840’s brought to the now widowed Abraham Lucas several more grandchildren, but he also watched several of his children die young. Sarah (Lucas) Copeland passed away on January 20, 1845 in Mount Pulaski in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 50. Mary and John Turner at two more children around 1841, Haps Turner and Jarius Turner (exact dates of birth unknown). Phebe and Solomon Wood had two more children, Joseph Wood was born in 1843 and Solomon Wood around 1844. Phebe (Lucas) Wood died on January 20, 1845 in Mount Pulaski in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 46. Jabez and Elizabeth Lucas had one more child, I Madison Lucas in 1840, apparently Elizabeth passed away after this child’s birth because in 1842 Jabez married Sarah Ann Smith in Greene County, Ohio and they continued to enlarge the family with the births of Elizabeth Lucas in 1843, Marcy Massa Lucas in 1846 and Jabez C Lucas in 1849. John and Sarah Lucas had one more child; Sarah Lucas was born in 1841. Rhoda (Lucas) Powers died on March 27, 1841 in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 38. Jesse and Jane Lucas’ family continued to grow with the births of Marcy Lucas in 1840, Thomas Lucas in 1847 and Hannah Elizabeth Lucas in 1848. Abraham Lucas died on July 22, 1841 in Mount Pulaski in Logan County, Illinois at the age of 80.
